Learning From Someone Who Steps Into the Arena

There’s a difference between an instructor who only talks about hard things and one who actively seeks them out.

This past weekend at IBJJF Atlanta and IBJJF Miami, Kogaion Academy Coach Beatrice stepped back into the arena, competing at the adult black belt level in both light weight and middle weight divisions.

The result:

  • Two gold medals

  • Four matches

  • Four submissions

Two chokes from the back. Two kneebars. Every match finished.

But the medals aren’t the point.

Why Training Under Someone in the Arena Matters

Many people start looking for jiu jitsu near me or bjj near me because something feels missing.

Life gets comfortable. Predictable. Safe.
And deep down, there’s a quiet desire for challenge: something that forces growth instead of comfort.

At Kogaion Academy, we believe growth comes from doing hard things, not just talking about them.

When your instructor is actively competing at the highest level:

  • Techniques aren’t hypothetical. They’re pressure-tested.

  • Strategy isn’t outdated. It evolves in real time.

  • Lessons come from success and struggle

You’re not learning from someone who retired from challenge years ago.
You’re learning from someone who still puts themselves on the line.

Four Matches. Four Submissions. Real-Time Learning.

Competing at the adult black belt level in the IBJJF means facing opponents who are prepared, dangerous, and experienced. There’s no room for shortcuts.

This weekend’s finishes reflected the kind of jiu-jitsu we train every day at Kogaion Academy:

  • Control before chaos

  • Position before submission

  • Calm decision-making under pressure

These are the same principles taught to our students, whether they plan to compete or simply want to become stronger, more capable versions of themselves.
